"I just haven’t decided on the title yet. Not irrevocably. So why don’t I try and help you visualize the setting with a description of… let’s say, the scenery?

There is none.

Well, so much for that…

Oh, except for a giant clock hanging at the back wall (that should run too fast, too slow or stop running altogether!) and a few necessary objects that are brought on stage and then taken off it.

There are also a number of characters -or personages if you prefer- involved in this. We have:

a. THE DIRECTOR
who is supposed to be rehearsing a new play and is dressed extravagantly and behaves accordingly. He walks all over the place reading out the story, sometimes turning to face the audience and only faces the actors when it’s their turn to play. He is often disappointed with their performance and repeats some parts or changes his mind about others. He also plays the MAN IN HOLE the first time.

b. “ONE” and “ANOTHER”
the two main characters, who should be as similar-looking as possible and should try to confuse the audience as to who is who. They should even interchange between roles from one part to another. When narrating, they should keep interrupting one another, almost totally forgetting who is who. They are not actually two persons, but more like one. “ONE” is (usually) he who seems smarter and has the initiative and “ANOTHER” simply looks more puzzled and follows his lead or asks for explanation. They should try to give the impression of two (mediocre) actors rehearsing and often perform in the manner of clowns rather than theatre actors. During long parts without dialogue they should make gestures towards the audience and try acting out some of what is being said or look bored, play games, make fun of THE DIRECTOR –all behind his back.

c. COUPLE IN BED, OLD MAN and NURSE, etc.
who should be one male, one female and should avoid exposing their faces to the audience and should try altering their voices for each role. They are also THE DIRECTOR’s helpers and they move the clock if necessary. Consider having them serve as spectators when possible.
What the hell, have them serve drinks! (or do whatever necessary...) [...]"
